Even if the Mac didn’t originally come with an 87 W adapter, USB-C PD (Power Delivery) lets higher-watt adapters safely charge most USB-C Macs (the Mac will only draw the power it needs):
13-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro (USB-C models) — will charge; they just don’t require the full 87 W.
MacBook Air models with USB-C (2018 and later) — will charge safely, but might not take full 87 W if their internal limits are lower (they pull what they need).
Other USB-C MacBooks and laptops — most USB-C PD-compliant laptops will accept power from an 87 W charger if the USB-C PD profiles match.
